Thanks blue eyes.....I am like so many PC users, I really resent the virtual monopoly that Microsoft enjoys in the area of operating systems. The only way we will ever break it down is by the "man in the street"embracing public domain software.
Microsoft  are greedy capitalists and build obsolescence into their products, guaranteeing future income.
Also like so many other PC users, I have never gotten off my bum and learned about Linux.....I shal give this site a look...

If anyone wants a 'low risk' entry into the Linux world - I have a copy of Linspire Linux as a standalone bootable CDRom operating system... ie, you stick it in your PC, reboot and it loads a fully-working Linux system (with all the applications).. *without* touching your Windows and with no need to install a thing.

I'm very happy to burn a few copies, just let me know if you want one.  It's quite cool.

Hi All,

Concerning Linux, I have used Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake, Knoppix, Lindows, Linspire,
Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
I'm still in anticipation of a distro that has all the smooth applications Windows has.
After some weeks playing and using one of these distro's I see myself sitting behind the
system in frustration.  Missing Yahoo Messenger, fine mail clients like Outlook Express
{yeah, strange but true}, Thunderbird, The Bat, clear Fonts, and so forth and so on. Then I
decide to format the HD again, make the neccesary partitions and put for the ninetieth time Windows
on the hard drive. Grin
I never get the satisfaction I long for with a Linux distribution, I think I'm from the
Windows Camp...Of course I hate the blue screens, the 138000 viruses...etc.etc...

There is an other option, a Mackbook. Grin  But I have to think twice because the configuration
I have in mind will cost me over 3400 euros.  Cry Too much IMHO for a notebook.S..t!

Well, I hope the next version of Windows, Vista, will fulfill some of my computer desires.
I doubt it though...We will see.

Grtz,
Norman

I also have used most of those distributions and have found them all wanting to a greater or lesser extent until the latest version of SUSE 10.1, it is certainly worth a look.

Remember quite a few of the programs that you have missed Yahoo Messenger, Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird etc have a version available that runs on Linux. Also available are Linux versions of Google's Earth and Picasa. That's without getting into running emulation under "Wine" (well actually Google Earth does use wine). I have run MS Office, IE6, MS Media Player etc all on Linux but you really have to ask yourself why you would want to when there are great free of charge alternatives available.

It seems that the time of the Linux Desktop has finally arrived provided you keep an open mind and be prepared to learn a little bit. Any change will not be painless and that will also be true with the next MS operating system not to mention MS XP 64Bit (Which is extremely painfull), but there is one pain that is missing from Linux in general and that is the hip pocket pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also fail to see how all of the work involved in Virus Scans, Spyware scans, Defraging, Blue Screens and complete reinstalls accompanied by total loss of settings / data is all that much fun especially when you are paying heaps for the privilege.

In what other business are you allowed to sell something where the seller doesn't even claim that his product works, and makes the buyer sign an agreement (EULA) to that effect.  Embarrassed

At this very moment I download the latest version of SuSe 10.1 from a torrent site.
{The 5 CD + addon ISO  instead of the DVD ISO}
The download speed is around 325 kB/s with BitComet 0.70
The download will be finished, when the speed continues, within 3 hours.
I will use the distro next to WinXp.
Using the dual boot gives me the possibility to use WinXp as well.
I wonder how long I will use SuSe this time... After a while I always get fed up with Linux...
We will see...

Hello Dutch,

I presume that you want to install another browser or do you want to
have a fresh copy of the one u used before? {MSI}

I would recommend Mozilla Firefox.
Just download the latest version from their downloadsite
and install it. That's all. Netscape 8.1 is also a nice stable one.

The Firefox download site link:

Hi Dutch,

I'm happy that you succeeded in installing Firefox.
Nice that I could give some advice, after all you manage it yourself Grin
Some like Firefox more then MSI.
Myself I change so many times from browsers...
No one is really stable at the end  Cry
But Firefox rules the cyber waves at the moment I guess
