hi all,

i'm a british guy recently married to a thai lady and we have a 2.5 yr old son.

i'll be arriving back in thailand next week and want to register our marriage at the british embassy and apply for my son's british passport at the same time.

as i understand it to register the marriage i get the marriage documents we got at the ampur translated into english, then we present them at the embassy and they will process this into a british marriage license and register us on the uk's register.

am i missing anything?  are there specific translation services to use?

likewise for my son's passport any information i can get in advance for this would help...

what documents are required??

i know this information is available online - but there are limits to the sites i can open through the company servers here in saudi ...

any infor VERY gratefully received.

George,

I am not sure of all the requirements, but I was married a couple of years ago in Bangkok and an agent took care of everything including registering the marriage with the UK authorities - it cost a few quid but was very easy.

A couple of weeks ago while in Bangkok the same agent sorted out British citizenship and the British passport for our new daughter. I had no spare time and using the agent I didn't even have to go to the embassy. All I had to do was supply a couple of passport photos, my birth certificate, marriage cerificate, the daughters birth certificate etc and it was all sorted out. It couldn't have been easier. Again, it cost a bit but saved all the running around. The agent also sorted out an Australian passport for our daughter which was more difficult than the British one but still very easy.

Strangely enough the Thai passport is the most difficult for her to get - it requires myself, my wife and our daughter to all go to the passport office so she can be finger printed and have her eyes scanned but this hasn't been possible yet. None of this seems necessary for the UK or Aussie passports.

I would imagine of you wanted the agent to sort out registering the marriage and your son's British passport all you would have to do would be make a quick visit to supply the documents and everything you require could be posted back to your house later.

If you want details of the agent please PM.

Hi George,

The British Embassy does not place your marriage on the british register. All they do (for a fee, currently 2088 baht) is hold your original Thai certificate in the General Register Office in the UK. This is only of use if someone in the UK wants to know if you are married in Thailand or not.

Here is an excerpt from the Embassy website and a link to the page.

Consular Section can arrange for your marriage certificate to be deposited with the General Register Office (GRO) in the United Kingdom.  This not a legal obligation and has no bearing on the validity or otherwise of the marriage.  It simply means that you are able to obtain a certified copy of your marriage certificate directly from the GRO should you need to do so in the future.  Please ask us for further details if you wish do this

http://ukinthailand.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/living-in-thailand/how-register-marriage/

If you still wish to do this you don't need an agent, just take your certificate to the the Embassy and pay the fee. But make sure you have a few copies first.

You need to hand in a letter of application details of which can be found at http://ukinthailand.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/living-in-thailand/how-register-marriage/recording-marriage-uk  You do need the marriage certificate translating into English. We had ours translated at Issan Lawyers in Korat by Seb and it has proved useful several time since we moved back to the UK

How did you get in touch with this agent? How much did it cost, approximately? Cheers, I need to get this done for my daughter.  Smiley

You really do not need an agent it is a very straightforward procedure.

hi,

we just go the whole thing done for alex our son - passport, birth cetifitcate, registration etc etc,

i was recomended another service through this site, who onb the day oi went was unavailabke so i went looking about and fount this other place.

the woman to contact is called "Eid" or her formal name is "Jamaree".

she's efficient, speaks perfect english, knows her job and cuts no corners.

it's clear she knows her job and she wants to succeed, so she's persistant and meticulous in filling out the forms and so on, she won't accept the applications until she's sure it's all in order a her fee covers the extent of the application.  so if the first attempt isn't successful, she'll continute to support the application with you until the visa is granted.

i've engaged and endured a few thai "agency/enablers" in the past and been disappointed/let down/failed by the lot, but Khun  Eid was a breathe of fresh air.

i don't have her email or website handy but PM me for it.

meantime call her - 0819051949

Derek, do the applications take long to process? A week? A few weeks? A few months?

Cheers

I got my son a British Passport at the same time and it took about 10 working days.

The link I posted says 5 working days for the Birth Registration process.
