Apologise that I don't know English proper word for that kind of food. It's very popurlar thai food and very a-roi for me ;-) My favorite.

Kanoom-Jeen or (Kanoom-Chinese) ;-)) Kanoom-Jeen is Thai vermicelli eaten with peppery curry and various kinds of fresd vegetable. Korat has a very famous Kanoom-Jeen called Kanoom-Jeen Ban Pradok.

Ban Pradok is where you can see a lot Kanoom-Jeen restaurant, local style. If you drive away from Pegasus Junction, go straight follow the way opposite Pegasus, there you will be in Ban Pradok area and further away is Muen-Wai district I think. There's some famous Kanoom-Jeen restaurants, we have been to some places regularly.. "Ton Malagor" or Kru Yod" and some more.

As Korat has a very famous Kanoom-Jeen Ban Pradok. TAT and the province will organize a big event of food fair / festival, featuring different types of Kanoom-Jeen from different restaurants, some other activities present culture and history of Kanoom-Jeen and Ban Pradok way of life etc. If I'm not wrong they will have concert too, Pleng Luk Toong (Thai country music)...

The name of the event can be translated as "Miracle of Kanoom-Jeen" (or something similar) ;-)

Date : from 31 July - 3 August 09.
Venue :  Pradok Kokphai School in Pradok area.

If you have never seen Kanoom-Jeen, I have some pictures.

edit the venue

I've just had a visit from the Puu Yai for Ban Praduk who persuaded me to enter a Kanoom Cheen making competition at this festival on 31st July. My wife says there will be lots of music, dancing and plenty of sanook!  Grin Grin Grin

Apparently they're trying to get lots of Farang/Thai couples to enter this contest, so if you fancy making a fool of yourself in front of the TV cameras just send me a PM. I've got lots of entry forms.

Got to go now for my Kanoom Cheen cookery lesson from Mrs KW.  Wink Wink Cheesy Grin

I think there are two possible kinds of noodles for 'Kanom Jeen'? Perhaps Mrs KW, Orchid or someone else can confirm (or refute) that.

This is difficult to explain in english and since I'm not an expert on Kanoom jeen cooking I will try to explain from my experience eating Kanoom jeen.  Grin

As far as I know there're 2 kinds of noodles, one kind the noodle made from milled and fermented flour and another kind, noodle made from new-milled flour but the first one is the kind you will usually see in any Kanoom jeen place.

I usually concentrate on the curry, it makes Kanoom jeen in each places different, there're many kind of curry to be eaten with the noodle. When we call Kanoom jeen it means the noodle only.

The curry from Ban Pradok is unique, hot and spicy, of couse a-roi mak. That's why they are really famous there.

And another reason why people love Kanoon Jeen, it's go well with fresh vegetable. Have Kanoom jeen means a good chance to eat many fresh vegetable.

Someone else might explain it better. Probably KW can explain better now from his cooking lesson.  Grin

After further discussion with Mrs KW it seems that it's not an actual cooking competition, just a few games that somehow involve Kanoom Jeen noodles. I don't suppose I'll get the full story until I actually get there, but if you're interested DDB it's on the 31st July, that's two weeks from today, please PM me if you want an entry form and don't mind making a fool of yourself.  Grin Grin Grin

where is Ban Praduk

Coming from town go past Makro and turn left at the traffic lights at the Pegasus Hotel and that is Ban Pradok.

Sorry for late reply Andy, my computer has been playing up in the last few days.

Unfortunately I can't email the form as I don't have a scanner, but give me a day or two and I'll get it to you.

Regards

News from kctv

The info about the game you've mentioned, in thai is "การแข่งขันเขยฝรั่งจับเส้นขนมจีน" a game for couples with farang husband to show the skill of "cooling the noodles", its about the last step of making Kanoom Jeen noodles. See the last photo on the link.

You really need to practice, must be fun!  Cheesy

May be some more games..
