Apologise that I don't know English proper word for that kind of food. It's very popurlar thai food and very a-roi for me ;-) My favorite.
Kanoom-Jeen or (Kanoom-Chinese) ;-)) Kanoom-Jeen is Thai vermicelli eaten with peppery curry and various kinds of fresd vegetable. Korat has a very famous Kanoom-Jeen called Kanoom-Jeen Ban Pradok.
Ban Pradok is where you can see a lot Kanoom-Jeen restaurant, local style. If you drive away from Pegasus Junction, go straight follow the way opposite Pegasus, there you will be in Ban Pradok area and further away is Muen-Wai district I think. There's some famous Kanoom-Jeen restaurants, we have been to some places regularly.. "Ton Malagor" or Kru Yod" and some more.
As Korat has a very famous Kanoom-Jeen Ban Pradok. TAT and the province will organize a big event of food fair / festival, featuring different types of Kanoom-Jeen from different restaurants, some other activities present culture and history of Kanoom-Jeen and Ban Pradok way of life etc. If I'm not wrong they will have concert too, Pleng Luk Toong (Thai country music)...
The name of the event can be translated as "Miracle of Kanoom-Jeen" (or something similar) ;-)
Date : from 31 July - 3 August 09. Venue : Pradok Kokphai School in Pradok area.
If you have never seen Kanoom-Jeen, I have some pictures.
edit the venue

I think there are two possible kinds of noodles for 'Kanom Jeen'? Perhaps Mrs KW, Orchid or someone else can confirm (or refute) that.
This is difficult to explain in english and since I'm not an expert on Kanoom jeen cooking I will try to explain from my experience eating Kanoom jeen. As far as I know there're 2 kinds of noodles, one kind the noodle made from milled and fermented flour and another kind, noodle made from new-milled flour but the first one is the kind you will usually see in any Kanoom jeen place. I usually concentrate on the curry, it makes Kanoom jeen in each places different, there're many kind of curry to be eaten with the noodle. When we call Kanoom jeen it means the noodle only. The curry from Ban Pradok is unique, hot and spicy, of couse a-roi mak. That's why they are really famous there. And another reason why people love Kanoon Jeen, it's go well with fresh vegetable. Have Kanoom jeen means a good chance to eat many fresh vegetable. Someone else might explain it better. Probably KW can explain better now from his cooking lesson.

Coming from town go past Makro and turn left at the traffic lights at the Pegasus Hotel and that is Ban Pradok.

Sorry for late reply Andy, my computer has been playing up in the last few days. Unfortunately I can't email the form as I don't have a scanner, but give me a day or two and I'll get it to you. Regards KW

News from kctv The info about the game you've mentioned, in thai is "การแข่งขันเขยฝรั่งจับเส้นขนมจีน" a game for couples with farang husband to show the skill of "cooling the noodles", its about the last step of making Kanoom Jeen noodles. See the last photo on the link. You really need to practice, must be fun! May be some more games.. http://pradok.site50.net/456/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=26&Itemid=40

This morning myself and several other Farangs were invited to a "pre-festival" event at a very large old house in Ban Pradok. I'm not sure what this was actually all about (except that the theme was Kanoom Cheen) but it was a formal do and it was attended by several dignitaries, the main one being a prominent member of the goverment, I think. All the dignitaries gave long speeches and there were lots of TV cameras there. I think some of it was shown live on the news. There was a dance depicting the original making of the noodles and some of the farangs were able to attempt to coil the noodles with their hands. There wasn't time for us all to have a go, but I guess that this what the competition will be about. The noodles have to be coiled by hand and presented on a banana leaf on a plate. As you say Orchid, I'll have to get some practice in before next Friday!

I've been to the festival today and it was raining. The street in the area is rather narrow, cars stucked in the traffic. The atmosphere of the festival, for me, it looks like a local market. I tried many dishes with different type of curry. I didn't have time to see any activities / competitions. Here's the link from atkorat.net, show some photos of the opening day. http://www.atkorat.net/board/index.php?topic=229.msg1405#msg1405

Thanks for that link Orchid, although not a very good picture of me! Yes the rain did spoil things a bit, and the organisation was a bit haphazard, but we had a great day out. We were taken in a procession of Samlors from near Yamo, through the city centre and up the road past Maharat hospital to the festival site. Sorry you didn't see us perform. Here's a few photos of the day.

Photos look good KW. I guess you won the prize!! I've been there too early, I didn't know all activities and the opening happened in the afternoon. Anyway I had a chance to see the parade when it started from Yamo in town.
