A branch of Kasikorn Bank is opening opposite the 7/11 (the one next to the post office) on Chomsurang road. The premises was formally a wholesale alcohol shop which has now moved next door.

I thought 'Ask a Local & Shopping' was the board to ask about or inform people about useful amenities in Korat. I admit, more often than not, it is used by people wanting to locate a particular sevice or product. But, as in the case of the recent 'Tesco Lotus in Joho' thread, it is sometimes used to tell people about a new amenity. I just thought it might be of some use to someone. You have my sincerest apologies.

I am curious why some people think Kasikorn is best bank in Thailand .. I am using Siam and Bangkok banks and find customer service terrible at both and every time I walk by ANY bank it seems that there are always massive line ups ... not just at end of month when people get paid ... is Kasikorn better ?? which branches do you recommend ?

I've been to several branches of Kasikorn and the service is always good, not like Bankok Bank where theres always a queue no matter which branch or at what time.

If you live anywhere near Choho, the branch there is very good.

I concur with the above statements. I've used them for the past 3 years and service has always been good. Opened a savings account at Bangkok Bank for my toddler and no matter what time of month I go in, there is always a line. However, I have not used them for any additional services nor have I used any other banks so my experience is limited.

i used bangkok bank for years and it wasn't until i moved to pak chong and wanted to move my bkk bank account from bangkok to their pak chong branch that i ended up in the kasikorn as the bkk bank in pak chong would move my account for me without a non-imm "b" visa and kasikorn opened a new account no problem.

i'm really glad i made the change!

they are helpful, nice and generally less busy than the bkk bank and so far the service has been great!  they always seem prepared to make an effort to help and their offices all over the place seem to be like this - something i CANNOT say for the bkk bank.

I too have always been happy with Kasikorn, they were the only bank who would open an account for me some years ago and and when in Thailand the staff at the Mall branch seem like old friends. It is very easy to use their online banking from the UK and make payments via their SMS password service. My wifes favourite last month was renewing the Visa cash card so she can now have her face printed on it!  Cheesy

The Bangkok Bank next to the Chao Phraya Hotel (opposite ELC language school) is usually empty. But obviously that's quite a distance from you if you live in the Choho area.

The sun setting on Wang Nam Khieo

I have nothing but praise for Kasikorn bank. I use their online banking system, I have a visa card with them and can make international payments for things I cannot buy here in Thailand. My local branch in Wang Nam Khieo, the staff call my by my first name, when withdrawing large amounts of money I don't need my passport, the letter I require for my visa extension is done by the next day and costs 100 baht. All round excellent service. I did have both a Siam Commercial account and a BKK bank account, both banks fail to compare with K bank in my humble opinion.

Thanks everyone for your comments ... I think you guys have convinced me to switch ... I have been trying to NOT compare the terrible service here to banks in Canada but the service and on line facilities really suck with BKK Bank

Does any bank besides Bangkok Bank have a US routing number for direct deposit of US Federal funds? That's the only reason I'm sticking with them.

It's my understanding that BKK bank is the only bank authorized by the (Thai) gov't to receive US Fed. Funds.  This is the info provided to me by the Soc. Sec. Admin. in the US,  after I tried to have direct deposit set up at a different bank.. Thus, everyfew months I just withdraw the funds from the BKK Bank acc't, and deposit them in our living expense account at K bank....

That's probably a good plan TeeRoy. When you move the funds from BKK to K do you do an actual cash withdrawal or an ATM transfer?

Do you have a joint account at Kasikorn?

My wife  generally does a cash withdrawal, every few months or so, as the account is in her name. I'm not old enough to qualify for benefits yet.  She leaves one month's amount in the account to keep it open.  I do not have or use an ATM card for a Thai bank. The K bank account is a joint account which is more convenient for us to use, and the staff appear to be friendlyer.
I also maintain a single name account (mine) at K Bank also, which is on certificate of deposit, to use exclusively for immigration requirements of my retirement visa...

YES, indeed. If you are not residing in LOS, BKKbank will alloy you (not always) to open a saving account but will not provide you E-banking if you don't have a work permit or a certificate of residence. Kasikorn bank allows people(farangs) to open an account and have E-banking by just showing their passport (30-60 days turist visa) and e.g. an address at the hotel were they are staying or the G/F address when opening the account.

Concerning the Kasikorn bank,

The only "problem" that I have, it's when I want to make E-banking money transfer from my account to another account in Thailand. I will be needing an OTP(One Time Pincode) code for each transaction, and the problem consist in that the code will be sent to me by SMS to a THAI mobile number, and it's difficult when I'm living abroad. I tryed several times to get the OTP sent by mail (OTP 2), but the procedure is so complicated that I gave up.

Was it while you are in LOS or was it also when living in UK ? Do you have your Thai SIM card active in the UK, so you can receive OTP/SMS from Kasikorn bank?

Hi DK

To use the Kasikorn online banking we went into the Mall branch when we were last over in Thailand and asked them to change the Thai phone number to a sim card we had bought which has a facility that you can leave it up to a year before you have to top it up so any credit does not expire before then (you can top it up online or of course get a relative in Thailand to put some credit on at an ATM). They did this in branch and took a copy of my passport and asked me to sign a form and then faxed it to their head office, a day or so later they emailed me to say the new number was registered. We have used the online banking as normal from the UK and they send the OTP one time pin code to our Thai sim card and I enter it as normal and the transaction is completed ok. It certainly works well enough. Of course we do not use the Thai sim card for anything else in the UK due to the expensive calls etc. Before we just had a normal sim card but you had to keep topping it up otherwise it would not work, with this one having a longer expirey date it's ok. I transferred some money this morning again without a problem.
