Welcome Charles, There are many of us from the States living in or around Korat. There are 118 American vets in the Korat VFW post and about half live in Thailand. I live in JoHo and there are 7 Americans within a 3 block radius of my house. Send me a PM next time you are going to be in Korat and maybe we can hook up for a drink. Byron/Rdrokit

Hi Charles. Welcome. You bring up a good point about the "veteran" Thailand residents and the occasionally bad attitude toward newbies. You'll find this in all areas of life such as school, your career, sports, hobby groups, etc. Always the same type of people, too. It seems people forget that everyone starts everything from the bottom with absolutely no knowledge. To listen to some people they came out of the womb with full knowledge of a particular subject and everyone else should have as well. I subscribe to the old adage, "there's no such thing as a stupid question", no matter how many times it gets asked.
Life in Thailand is a bit like a microcosm of life itself. Everyone is at a different stage of the continuum at any given point in time. To complicate things, everyone begins their "Thailand Life" at a different point in their over-all life. Some first discover it in their twenties, like I did, while others make their first visit here much later, in their retirement years. Even though I may have a little more knowledge on a particular aspect of this country or city than say a 65-year-old who arrived six months ago, I would expect that he has much more over-all life knowledge than I have. So who is further ahead and who usurps whom? The answer is nobody and everybody. If everyone put their egos aside and shared information freely then we would all be better off.
That's what I like about this particular board because its scope is fairly small and relevant to me, the people are for the most part very helpful, and the person who manages it seems to be committed to keeping it that way.

Yes Jemi your post sums it up fairly well. There are a large number of old hands or "veterans" as you have said, on this forum. Many of us have been around for a long time and you will find that generally the "vets" keep a fairly low profile, post when they have something worthwhile to contribute or someone asks for advice or information that they can provide assistance with and we avoid conflict. I am not aware of any of the old hands that has a bad attitude towards "newbies" There is no doubt that we have had a few members who thumb their nose at the rules along the way but by one means or another they inevitably fall by the wayside. However the spinoff effect during the period when these people are active is very noticeable and in the past when this has occurred we have seen the numbers of people who are posting reduce quite markedly. I think that at age 71 I am still the oldest member of this forum but I am not sure about that - it has been a while since we did that little exercise. I respect and appreciate the comments of other members, even if their opinion differs to mine however it is very important, I believe, in so doing, to stay within the bounds of the simple rules that Sportrider introduced when he started this forum. If there is a difference of opinion then the case should be stated with some degree of respect and dignity. Charles you are very welcome to join with us at KoratFarang forum.
