I am coming to Korat next week for a month and was thinking about bringing a portable DVD player. I was wondering if there is some place near the mall that rents DVD's with either English or Thai subtitles. I speak very little Thai and I don't think my g/f English is good enough to follow a movie in English only. Thanks for any help.

DVDs are very easy to get - stands at the Mall or Big C, Klang Plaza, etc etc. Except for the very new stuff (which are pirated 'screeners' - ie a camcorder recorded from inside a cinema) most DVDs have a language menu - so you can watch with English soundtrack and Thai subtitles. They are very cheap to buy. I have never rented.

Ask always for a MASTER.The quality (special sound ) is better. 95% what you buy is OK.Ther ones that are not ok,you can bring back. You pay 100 bht a piece and 1 free if you buy 10. You also can have a stamp card with a stamp for every buy and a free DVD for a full card. (small stand near the BATA shoe shop, first floor)

The small stand near the Bata shop is run by the bigger shop down in the basement at the far east end. They have a large selection.
One caution on the subtitles. For some reason when they pirate a video they don't manage to pirate the subtitles. So, these are added later. Sometimes they are simply awful and hardly relate to what is actually being said at all. My wife likes to have the English subtitles on because it helps her understand the spoken English. But I find the poor subtitles to be a distraction. Ms. B says that the Thai subtitles are usually OK.

Michael, I can get you probably some "classical" movies and art stuff. I bought many in China. Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Stanley Kubricks, old new French wave classic with English subtitle, Wim Wenders, etc. Now, some of my DVDs are in Roi-Et (a friend, including the bicycle thief, a classic Italian movie) and I have a lot in Canada (and I should pay a visit in the next 4 months and bring back 300 DVDs, if I can...). So, maybe you can copy them or we can arrange something...Many titles are unavailable in Thailand. They have EVERYTHING in China..but I don't have the new stuff (2 years) unless I did some download on Internet...which would be illegal and forbidden!

I was actually in Korat two weeks' ago just for two days and I bouight a dvd in The Mall for 200 baht. I can't remember the name of the shop and I can't find the plastic bag that they gave me but it was red and there was English written on it. One of the girls even spoke English to me when I got to the counter to tell me that one of the dvds in my hand was only in Thai. The selection was mostly commercial stuff but they had some arthouse and Asian horror too. The dvd I bought plays perfect in English with the option of no subtitles too. Oh, thanks for your kind offer Sebastian. I'll be in touch with you about that whenever I make it to Thailand to live. It's looking like it'll be next year now but maybe sooner.....

200 baht!!!!!!!! You got robbed!!!!!! It's 100 baht in Korat! and 1 free if you buy 10. I feel sorry for you!!!!!!!! In China, some of them were about 5-7 RMB (which is around 30-50 baht, that was 2 years ago). In Laos, it's around 75 baht. China is still the best place but customs in foreign countries are checking a little more. 2 years ago, a friend of mine took back 150 to 200 DVDs in his luggages. He was stopped at the Canadian airport, check his luggages, they asked him what was it, he said it's for personal use, and they let him go without fines or more questions. Maybe he was lucky.

Seb and Mario, you both know that the big shop (with the red bags !) near Fuji and Bkk bank and shoe selling, only sell "official" dvd's. Sometimes they do offer special selection for 99 baht but most are from159 till 590 baht.(Also good music selection) The small dvd shops always have the risk of a "failure".Only ask for master copy and than still the sound is not like the original. If my "master" is a failure I just go back, they smile and I get a new one to try

If there is a problem, you bring back the DVD and they change it. So... not difficult to choose!

Well, I think that I'd rather pay a little extra for the non-pirate copies but of course it's good to have many options. Also, 200 baht is a mere 4 euro in my country and that dvd would cost around 2000 bant here

I agree with you M. There is not much to go back to if you find out at home(in Europe) that the quality is louzy My son does the same.He brings 10 - 20 pcs back, looks at it and sells them (If quality is OK)

While in Korat last month I did buy about 10 or 12 DVD's. However, I perfer to only buy movies that I think I will watch again at some point in the future. Some of the movies my g/f likes to watch I know I will never watch again and so I prefer to rent rather than collecting clutter to eventually be given away. In my case it is quite convenient as the rental store is not far from my g/f parents home. Also you cannot beat the price, 4 movies for 70 bt.
