I think this site simply shows that bigotry, racism and class discrimination are as much a part of Thai culture as it is in any other. Unless people have been gossiping behind my back, I have not experienced much of this attitude myself. I have always found Thai people friendly, good humoured and genuinely happy to interact with me. Even my attempts at speaking Thai have been well received- most people strike me as happy that we have at least tried to learn some Thai.

No different than anywhere else in the world, Just anther fat drunk looking for a little hoy. The only difference is that in Thailand they can actually find one. I can't say that I blame this woman for feeling the way she does. Then again. Sounds like a good name for the new sports bar!!555

Earning 20.000 THB and run a non profit orientated .com web page to rage against farangs - not easy to believe. Although I believe that every incident the person posted there could have or did in fact happen.

Dear Cliff, I have to disagree here. A "commonly wide spread opinion" is not a good thing. It's even dangerous... And stereotypes are probably what we should fight against. In essence, foreigners are just the same as Thais... I get sick to think that Thais believe all foreigners are the same... Ask them what is a foreigner? Does it include Africans? afro-Americans? Japanese, Chinese? Only white people? What about Asians living in Europe or America? Only western countries? Most of them never been abroad. If there is a difference, it's in our education. Not in the color of our skin, the size of our body or what we eat.

I must agree with Cliff At least that is the way how I look at it. The stereotype farang in The Mall is the one dresses in a sleeveless shirt (underwear ) short sport trousers and slippers (no socks). Many times tattoos and gold chain. Holiday times brings a lot of these farang. I try to dress well to make the difference (although I must admit that I don't know the persons and should not judge)

Hi Dutch. Youmust have seen me in the Mall. Although i do wear socks with trainers but no flipflops, i dont dress like this all the time only when i need to feel comfortable. 90% of the time i wear trousers or jeans and a shirt.

So Dutch. Please tell us how you dress. You seem to be the expert on expat fashion here in Korat. If tattoos and gold offends you perhaps you should pack up and go home. Last time I checked, especially during Song Kran, I saw more tattoos and gold on Thais than I did expats. Have you had your eyes checked lately?
Vicodan i don't know who or what you are but let me tell you that Dutch is one of our finest and most upstanding members. How dare you come on this forum and offend our members in such a manner. An apology is in order Vicodan.

Hi Vicodan,
Dutch mentioned already how he dresses: I try to dress well to make the difference (although I must admit that I don't know the persons and should not judge)
I think everybody has the right to choose the way he likes to dress as long as he / she dresses at all. I have seen farangs in a proper daytime restaurant without any shirt and that really put me off.
In this regard I understand if somebody likes to differentiate himself. Some people believe that dressing does make all the difference, I believe it makes some difference.

Well I was on holiday in the area recently and whilst being a tattoo free zone and leaving the gold chain to the wife (who else), I have to confess to shopping in the mall wearing a polo shirt, shorts and flip flops (very good value from Tesco at three pounds), why would I want to wear anything other than what is comfortable when traipsing around after the wife for what feels like hours on end? Come the warmer weather in the UK (hah!) and I'll dress the same here.
I certainly wouldn't 'dress up' to go shopping!

I also wrote that I should not judge, so why your question? Everybody will have his circle of friends that will fit in his lifestyle. This will be sorted out during a number of years. I don't deny anybody his/her right to dress as one likes but........it is me ,who doesn't feel comfortable. You seems to know quite something about Thailand.Ask a Thai about what he thinks about the farangs dressed like explained before. I am also surprised by your post looking at our correspondence of March 26th. You should not be surprised well??

As evidenced by the web site, it would seem that bigotry and ignorance is a world wide curse.
